  1. Hello Again!

feel free to reflect about SCILENCE and your thoughts around the vast world of Biotechnology. Let’s ask questions and continue the dialogue!!!

    Welcome,
    Emily

  2. Gabriel, Emily and Company:

A wonderful show! Cohesive, coherent, and extremely well spoken [especially for dancers!] Informative and provoking, but not didactic!

I was especially struck by the contrast on Saturday between the show and the discussion/panel that followed. Both were excellent, authentic and relatively egoless; and the contrast of the back to back presentations underscored how different it is to present information and human expression by rational talking heads and empowered humans moving and expressing that has the rational as a touchstone but includes the ineffable, body, heart , mind and emotional totality and direct non-rational communication of dance and performance. In many ways I felt that the performance was the better communicator and informer, both deeper and more soulful and broader if less precise and more subject to differing interpretation.

The panel, guided by Gabriels’ excellent questions, was very informative, but quickly reached and admitted its limits on bringing answers to the overall questions of what biotech means to us, and how it can be brought under control and employed for the greater good, and whether there is in fact a greater good that can emerge vs. a continuing ever steeper descent down the slippery slope of biotech for purely private gain and purposes [even if those private purposes are based on a laudable desire and need to cure and heal human beings] and military, political and economic control. I thought the performance better expressed these questions and the total human context that suggests answers than the panel, again not thru any fault of the panels, but as a result of the medium by which they were communicating and the limits of non-poetic speech and thought.

    more later!

Question for you though: is this the place to share notes/thoughts on the performance itself, or should we do this directly?

Please keep up the good work! I think that your approach to this material and the area of biotech merits further exploration and expression.

I am proud to have been able to help in my own way.

    Roger Neece

  3. This is the place for all thought/notes - performance or otherwise.

I think you bring up an excellent point about the limits on our speech and talking heads. But I do feel it is necessary for people to have these issues really spelled out for them.
They are very bewildering and can lead to much confusion.

In the end though I agree
the performance shared a lot more about the issues
    then the panel did

    thanks Roger

    Gabriel

  4. Gabriel,

I will work up some notes on the performance and post.

I agree that the audience needed to have the panel info and presentation format to get information in a more precise and logical manner, i.e. spelled out for them.

My point was that both “mediums” were valuable, and different, and the contrast between them illuminating also! At least for me! And surprising in the contrast, because I would not have predicted that the performance would be as successful - or even more successful- in presenting the issues as the panel of experts.

Kudos to you and the company for that success! And to the panel! And I think that the continued use of the panel or other rational discussion format in conjunction with future performances is important, and I would urge you to include this in some form.

Speaking of the future, in post performance discussion with the woman bio-ethicist, she mentioned that her organization was going to have a “gala” upcoming, and I urged her to think of having you perform there. I would strongly urge you to look for non-typical venues like this to perform this work, as you are with the QBG. Venues such as the meetings/conferences of professional or advocacy organizations involved in the bio-tech field, science museums [such as the science museum in Golden Gate Park in SF], lobbies of NYC buildings utilized by large companies in this field such as Pfizer, Monsanto, etc., and to utilize the PR apparatus of these organizations to call attention to your work, both the uniqueness of its content and format/presentation and intention.

This kind of public notice can get you recognition as a “new” kind of dance/performing artist, and give you some “gravitas” not necessarily associated with choreographers. These things in turn could allow you to leapfrog some of the the typical steps in the dance ladder [as we discussed at the lake at CI36], on the road to being presented at DTW, ST. Marks or the Joyce, or out of town venues such as the Walker in Minneapolis.

How are you and the company dealing with post-perfomance depression? If you and they do not suffer from this malady, please excuse my bringing it up, unfortunately that was not the case for me.

    Roger

  5. Thanks Roger!

I am only reading this last posting now (busy is how i am dealing with post performance depression!).

It was a pleasure to have be a part of that weekend and our work. Your thoughts are valuable here, I have been having some of the same ideas while reflecting and trying to rework our system a bit and decide what to focus on next for us.

For a long time I have been envisionng of us performing for science museums and a diversity of venues (this type of outreach is where pLIMB’s heart is also- i have seen it be such a success before).

So now, for me, is the time to really leap forward and investigate some of these ideas (with results!).

    Thanks for dialoging Roger,
    Emily
